Morocco – a nation passionate about sports – is preparing to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Moroccans have a proud sports heritage: for example, Morocco’s track legends (like Hicham El Guerrouj) and the national football team (“Atlas Lions”) have achieved historic feats, including winning the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and becoming the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal (2022).

Stadium renovations across Morocco: Morocco has overhauled many of its major stadiums in record time. Marrakech’s Grand Stade de Marrakech was fully renovated by mid-2025, meeting all CAF standards. Tangier’s Ibn Battuta Stadium is being upgraded, while Agadir’s Adrar Stadium has expanded and was inaugurated on 31 May 2025. Casablanca’s Mohammed V Stadium was renovated as well. Rabat’s new Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah, with a 68,500-seat capacity and striking palm-leaf façade, will host the AFCON opening match and final.

Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium inauguration: On September 4, 2025, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Hassan officially inaugurated the rebuilt Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, under the order of His Majesty King Mohammed VI may God assist Him, setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest stadium build in under two years. Morocco’s national team played the first match at the venue, defeating Niger 5–0 in a World Cup qualifier on September 5, 2025, securing Morocco’s place as the first African country qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

Co-Hosting FIFA World Cup 2030: Looking ahead, Morocco will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal. The centerpiece is the planned Grand Stade Hassan II near Casablanca, designed to hold 115,000 fans. Six existing stadiums will also receive upgrades to meet FIFA standards, with dedicated organizations coordinating facilities, security, and planning to ensure a seamless World Cup experience.

In summary, Morocco is leaving no stone unturned in its AFCON 2025 build-up. From modernized stadiums to historic victories, Moroccan sports are on the rise, showcasing the nation’s pride, preparation, and ambition on the continental and global stage.
